Big Smelly Bear
Big Smelly Bear
Big Smelly Bear
by Britta Teckentrup

Kids will love this lighthearted and fun tale about keeping clean, featuring an adorable character that bath-resistant little ones will really relate to. It's never bath time for Big Smelly Bear: he doesn't brush, he doesn't wash, and he's simply unBEARable. No one can stand to come close! Then, one day, he wakes up with a most awful, unreachable itch. He could really use a little scratch from a friend, but Big Fluffy Bear won't help because Big Smelly Bear stinks! Will he change his ways and bathe? The witty ending is sure to satisfy!

If bath time isn't exactly received with 'hip hip horrays' in your house, Big Smelly Bear may be just the story to help show your little one the light - or, in this case, the tub.  Your child will love the large size of this book which, when propped up in their lap, will bring the bears to life before their eyes! The illustrations are large two-page multi-media spreads including paintings with earthy colors creating a definite foreground against a stark white sky. Many of the pictures are presented to appear textured, so your little one will be drawn to touch and see if it 'feels' the way it 'looks.'

The font is a large size for little ones beginning to recognize their letters and perhaps putting a few sounds together. Certainly have fun with the narration and dialogue from the bears - your child will enjoy hearing your 'bear voice'! The back-and-forth between Big Fluffy Bear and Big Smelly Bear on whether or not a bath is needed mirrors how such a debate escalates between child and parent; it begins with simple statement and quickly reaches a tantrum. However, the final result is certainly what you, as a parent, are hoping for. Big Smelly Bear accepts that if he wants to keep playing with his new friend (and he very much does!), he is going to have to keep himself clean and smelling better.

My niece Emily was fascinated by bugs, so she delighted in pointing out the flies following Big Smelly Bear around in each page, as well as the orange and blue/green caterpillars crawling around in the tree when Big Fluffy Bear and Big Smelly Bear first met. She has decided that perhaps baths aren't so bad afterall.
