Does your little one understand size yet? Whether they are still learning the concept, or would like to put their knowledge to practice, Big and Little is a fun book of side-by-side comparisons. Each example of something big and little has a two-page spread dedicated to it, with two short sentences in extra large font and two pictures; one big and one little, of course. The first sentence of every comparison is structurally the same, while the second sentence puts the example into action, "Big truck, little truck. Fun to ride." The repeated sentence structure also sets a steady reading cadence. The colorful photographs of real toddlers, parents, puppies, and toys against simple or solid-colored backdrops help make the associations even easier for your learning child. The children depicted are of both genders and different ethnicities.
The items used to demonstrate the 'bigs' and 'littles' will be familiar to your child, such as toy trucks, watermelon, bouncy balls, a tea party, dogs, boots, books, and so much more! The children on every page are smiling big, which your child will notice and perhaps imitate. Your child may enjoy pointing at the objects and having you name them, or blurting out the names that they already know.
When I read this book to my two-year-old friend, Kyle, I would stop after each page, point to something on the page, and ask, "Is this big or little?" Kyle decided to make a game out of it and hold his hands close together for 'small', and throws his arms out wide for 'big'. Every time something was big, he would flail his arms and giggle.
