Little Sal and Little Bear both lose their mothers while eating blueberries and almost end up with the other's mother.
Robert McCloskey's Caldecott Medal Winner Blueberries For Sal is an absolute classic that will warm your heart. This story was created over 60 years ago. The dark blue line drawings are beautiful and completely unique. With numerous printings and countless honors, this story about a mother and daughter looking for blueberries will win high accolades from your little reader.
There are several mix-ups between the baby bear and little Sal. The presence of bears adds the element of danger, but your child will be calmed by the sweet relationship between mother and daughter. This story will have more meaning for children when read aloud.
My dad read this to me when I was growing up, just as his dad read it to him. I would always get very excited when the bears would get near the people. I also loved it when my dad adopted a high voice to read all of the funny sound effects. He always wanted to make me laugh when we read together, and I think that's a big part of why books are so important to me today.
