Help your young child learn the many different textures of animals with this multi-media board book. Each two-page spread uses ear-catching alliteration to describe the animal and available texture; "Feel the soft, fluffy chicks." The texture word is presented in larger and bolder text than the rest of the sentence to help draw attention to it. This way, the book can be used when your child is very young to familiarize them with textures, and when they are a few years older and begin learning to read. Readers get to feel the texture of a baby chick's side, the velvet of a horse's face, a furry dog's chest, a lamb's wooly coat, and a pig's pink nose.
The book is extremely interactive, as feeling the different textures is part of the reading experience - it is what the words tell you to do. Your baby will love exploring the long 'fur' of the dog, the dense sheep's wool, and the spongy texture of the pig's nose. Children will want to hold the board book in their lap and turn the pages at their own pace, and in many different orders, so they can directly compare all the different textures. Some textures they will like more than others and return to them more frequently. This may encourage them to feel their surroundings more and notice the different textures of their hard plastic spoon, a soft pea, or a Cheerio somewhere in-between.
My friend's 10-month old son, Shaun, has enjoyed this book since he was about 5 months old. His favorite page is the dog with the furry chest, since dogs seem to be his favorite animal right now. He often finds this book among his other toys and carries it around with him. Shaun will sit up and flip through the pages, sometimes upside down, and he always gets excited when he finds the page with the dog.
