The book Food For Thought lives up to its title, because it can be used to teach your child shapes, colors, numbers, letters, animals, and opposites. The pictures use real everyday food that your child will recognize, but depicts them in new and creative ways; a cauliflower sheep, an artichoke bird, a banana plane, and cherry ants, just to name a few! Each page has a solid background of a new primary color, but the focus is certainly on the fun food shaped like animals and familiar objects. Although it may encourage your little one to play with food, it will certainly encourage creativity.
This book will likely be read in sections at a time, as you won't want to overwhelm your child with new information. You can do numbers one day and opposites the next. It is like many books in one! Your little one can choose what they want to learn that day and eventually begin combining the lessons; a yellow banana giraffe, a red strawberry heart, or green pepper frog. They will enjoy pointing to the food they are familiar with, and it may be a great idea to get them ready for lunch or snack time.
My friend reads parts of this book with her two-year-old son almost every day. She said he always points to the banana and oranges because they have those fruits in their kitchen where he can see them. He used to not want to try the oranges, but when she drew a smiley face on one and peeled the other, he was finally willing to try.
