This book is a celebration of spending time with a special grandmother.
Karen Katz's Grandma and Me is a fun interactive book for little ones to read with their own grandmas or parents. The thicker pages display pictures with few items in them, but lots of color and familiar patterns for children to recognize. A sentence per page tells a simple story while the interactive pictures add the details. Every other page has a large flap, opening in a different direction depending on what it is; the oven opens top-to-bottom, the suitcase opens bottom-to-top, and the door opens left-to-right. This will help your child begin associating objects and movements.
Your little one can help turn the pages, open the flaps, and even search for items such as the kitty and teddy bear doll that appear on each page. After a few times reading the story through, when the narrator poses questions to her grandma, don't be surprised if your child begins to respond before the flap has revealed the answer!
This has been one of my four-year-old niece's preferred books since she was one. Finding the cookies in the oven was her favorite for a long time. As she got older, she memorized the book and now recites it to me. She enjoys the role switching of her telling the story and me opening the flaps.
