Who would have though a garbage truck would have so much of an attitude?! This Horn Book Award winner follows a confident and proud garbage truck around the streets of New York City at night, as he narrates and explains his job with flair and attitude - he is one crude, rude garbage eatin' dude! The garbage trucks throws out all sorts of sound effect words and car jargon for your child to learn, such as doubles, dual op, pistons, bade, hopped, throttle, A.C., rev, and so many more. The font continually changes size and width, making following along as much fun as reading! The pictures are slightly abstract with bold black lines forming the garbage truck and other necessary objects, but everything else is blended together in beautiful contrasting colors, always overshadowed in blues and purples to indicate that it is night time.
One of the most unique aspects of "I Stink" is a completely new - and surprising -set of word association words for the alphabet; "D" is now for dirty diapers! "F" is for fish heads! "P" is for puppy poo! Your child can giggle at the baby humor of the truck burping after a huge 'meal' of garbage, or your theatrics when reading the funny words, "What's that? You think I stink? Whooooo-whee! Do I ever!" Encouraging your little one to join right in and roar with the truck, squeal with the breaks, and flash the lights makes the book even more interactive and fun.
I loved reading this book to my two-year-old friend Kyle. He has a toy semi, which we agreed looked enough like the garbage truck for him to play with it and mimic the actions in the book while we read. He has a newfound excitement now when the garbage trucks comes each week. We look out the window and watch together.
