"What if I break your favorite honey bowl? Will you still love me?" Alex's mom says that she will always love him, no matter what. Alex still isn't sure. He doesn't want to get into too much trouble for the broken honey bowl. Even if Alex gets into a pillow fight, paints the baby all different colors, or pours oatmeal over his head, his mom says that she will always love him. Gentle text and sweet illustrations show the unconditional love a mother has for her son. This book will assure children that their parents will always love them.

Alex, an adorable little bear, portrays the emotions that many young children feel when they have misbehaved or done something wrong as he wonders if his mother will still love him after he breaks her favorite honey bowl. Of course, the mother bear explains that regardless of what he does, including spilling paint on his baby sister or having a pillow fight, she will always love him. Kids will likely relate to Alex and feel sympathetic as he struggles with telling his mother the truth and finding a way to fix the situation. Bright illustrations show the bears as a loving family in a cozy home that adds extra warmth to this already feel-good story.

This is a great book for parents to read to their children to simply reinforce that they will always love them. It also introduces kids to the concept of actions, consequences and the connection between the two, such as how Alex will have to give his sister a bath if he spills paint on her or how he'll have to clean up the feathers that escape during the pillow fight. Kids will also witness a good lesson in forgiveness when the mother pardons Alex's breaking of the dish and kindness when Alex decides to make his mother a new bowl to replace the one he accidently broke.

I read this story to Emily, the three-year-old I babysit, and you could see her feeling the emotions that Alex goes through as we read the story. In fact, I can definitely see a lot of Alex in her and the other children I've babysat in the past. While all of these kids are generally wonderful, most children have their off days and we've had our accidents and mistakes. This is a great story to help children understand that it's okay to make mistakes and that their parents, or caregivers, will love them regardless.
