Learn about the machines used on a construction site in Machines at Work. The pictures pop off the page with thick lines and bold primary colors. The sentences succinctly describe the picture ("Mix that cement", "Dig up that Road," or "Lift that beam") so your little one will clearly associate the words with the action in the picture. Large lettering are conducive for beginning to recognize letters. The trucks are not named, just described by their action.
This is a good book to read a few times in a row, as it moves quickly and is easy to repeat. It also doesn't need to be read in order, so if your child is not ready to sit for very long, you can still have fun looking at just a few pages. Your little one will love flipping through the pictures on their own and pointing out the different trucks on each page. For additional activities, you can point at any object of the page and say the color, or ask your child to name it back to you.
When my niece was two, she liked the colors and pointing out the women construction workers. We would read this book before playing with trucks and blocks, helping her to associate the pictures with real life. Her favorite was always the yellow dump truck.
