This delightful book by P. K. Hallinan is sure to keep your child laughting. Hallinan began writing and illustrating books for children more than 35 years ago when his wife asked him to create a book for their boys. Since that time, he has written and illustrated nearly 100 books for children.
Grandmas are very special people; there is no end to what they would do to make their grandchildren smile. My Grandma and I has a child narrator who shares all the fun things she, her brother, and their Grandma do together. The story reads like a poem, with rhyming couplets that easily bounce off the tongue when read aloud. The characters do everything from playing pretend and dressing up, to coloring with crayons and creating things from clay. Ultimately, the story is about the love and respect children have for their grandparents. The colorful drawings on the thick board pages accurately convey the fun feelings with dark outlines and bright colors that pop off the page. If you have grandchildren, it will be hard not to smile.
The child narrator brings an authentic innocence to the story, which your little one will likely relate to. The book may inspire them to share the memories they have of their own Grandma. Encourage the sharing! What is your favorite place to go with Grandma? What is your favorite thing that Grandma cooks? What's your favorite game to play with Grandma? How does Grandma tuck you in at night? The answers are sure to be heartwarming and special. You can even share some memories of your own Grandma, which may be a concept your little one hasn't thought of before (that Moms have Grandmas too!).
My friend, Sam, was very excited to tell me all about his Grandmas. "I have TWO Grandmas!" he told me proudly. His favorite thing to do with both of them is to bake cookies and read. One of his Grandmas also has a dog, which Sam informed me is his dog when he's over.
