Noisy Barn!
Noisy Barn!
Noisy Barn!
by Harriet Ziefert

A boisterous parade of farm animals on their way to the barn certainly can cause quite a stir. With the cow mooing, the piglet oinking, the duck quacking, the chickens pecking and the cat meowing, it's a wonder they arrive at all. When they all get to the barn, children will clamor to make their own animal noises.

Have fun making noise with your little one as you read, snort, moo, and tweet-tweet "Noisy Barn" together. This colorful book will help teach your child the noises of some common barn animals through fun cartoon pictures and rhyming questions; "Can you bleat like a goat? Moo like a cow? Oink like a piglet behind a mother sow?" Thicker board pages also allow your child to hold the book themselves and turn the pages when they are ready for the next set of animals.

You can begin by pointing to the pictures and making the animal sound, encouraging your child to join in. Over time you should be able to just point at the animal, and your child will have associated the correct sound. This also invariably teaches them the names of animals, as you name each one while you point to it. The end of the book offers a nearly-guaranteed giggle fest when all the animals and noises are together at once!

When my husband Nate and I read this to our 18 month old friend, Dano, he didn't want to make the animal noises himself, but smiled when we took turns "hee hawing" and "caw-cawing" to him. Dano had a blast pointing to the different animals and hearing us respond with the appropriate sounds. He finally joined in, pointing to the duck and said, "cak" for "quack".
