You may be surprised how adorable sea creatures' babies can be. This hand sized board book features beautiful photographs of ten different ocean animals that will catch your little one's eye and raise their curiousity. Although some of the ocean animals are what you would expect (fish, sea lions, and sharks), there are also some less common animals like a manatee, sea horse, and otter pup. Each two-page spread includes a large photograph of the animals and one sentence in large bold font. The pages also focus on one primary color at a time, so once your little one has learned the animals, they can start working on colors.
Board books are perfect for children who want to participate in the reading process by holding the book and turning the pages. This urge should certainly be nurtured and encouraged. Let them flip the pages forward, backward, or stick the corners in their moth - anything to create a positive association with books. When they're not chewing on the edges though, point at the animals while reading their names, and follow along with your finger under the sentences as your read them aloud. This helps your child begin to associate words, sounds, and visuals.
My friend Dano favored this book when he was one. He insisted on holding it in his lap and would turn the pages every which way, often skipping a few pages at a time, but that was the glory of this book - it doesn't matter what order you read it in because each turn of the page is focused on a new animal. Dano seemed to like the sea horse the most and would point at it, waiting paitently, until I would say, "Seahorse."
