Knocked from her mother's safe embrace by an attacking owl, Stellaluna lands headfirst in a bird's nest. This adorable baby fruit bat's world is literally turned upside down when she is adopted by the occupants of the nest and adapts to their peculiar bird habits. Two pages of notes at the end of the story provide factual information about bats.

Not only is this story touching and full of lasting lessons, but Janell Cannon has made a memorable hero out of an unlikely creature - a bat. At its core, Stellaluna is a book about learning about yourself while embracing the differences of others. Children will certainly relate to Stellaluna's friendships and family relationships.

The book has large, beautiful illustrations and a snappy dialogue which makes it an excellent story to read aloud. Stellaluna struggles with landing on branches and eating unappetizing bugs are drawn so humorously that you and your child will spend many pages overcome by giggles.

I remember my father reading this story to me when I was young. He gave Stellaluna's three bird friends (Flap, Flitter, and Pip) goofy, high-pitched voices. I fell in love with this brave, wide-eyed bat, and now I enjoy sharing the story with my nieces and nephews. It just may be my all time favorite book.
