Leonard is no ordinary kid - he's enrolled in Superhero School, where leaping tall buildings in a single bound is considered child's play. If only division, fractions, and multiplication came as naturally, and weren't so, well, "ordinary." But when the kids' math teacher, Mr. Tornado, and the rest of the staff get kidnapped by ice zombies, Leonard and his pals find themselves using every superhero trick in the book - not to mention a few unexpected math skills - to divide (and conquer!) the enemy.
Aaron Reynolds' Superhero School is a fantastic book with exuberant illustrations and a fun story. It follows a boy as he starts school and becomes increasingly disappointed by all the math. Instead, he thinks that he should be stopping trains and learning to fly better. The book demonstrates the importance of math and shows that math can be fun!
Your child will get caught up in the story's action and will laugh all the way through at all of the cool illustrations. The story also incorporates a happy ending that encourages students to work hard in school. This message will be very effective coming from these cool superhero kids.
My niece Emily really enjoys this book. She loves the fact that the superheroes are children. It also provides her with an introduction to some of the complexities of math, such as multiplying and dividing. Though she is not yet familiar with these concepts, the book's skillful treatment of them will make her more interested when she starts learning math in school.
