Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes
Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes
Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes
by Mem Fox

As everyone knows, "nothing" is sweeter than tiny baby fingers and chubby baby toes. . . . And here, from two of the most gifted picture-book creators of our time, is a celebration of baby fingers, baby toes, and the joy they--and the babies they belong to--bring to everyone, everywhere, all over the world.

This is a gorgeously simple picture book for very young children, and once you finish the rhythmic, rhyming text, all you'll want to do is go back to the beginning . . . and read it again. The luminous watercolor illustrations of these roly-poly little ones from a variety of backgrounds are adorable, quirky, and true to life, right down to the wrinkles, dimples, and pudges in their completely squishable arms, legs, and tummies.

Also available in board book format.

It's time for your little one to learn where their fingers and toes are! This collaborative effort from Fox and Oxenbury shows how babies from all over the world have one thing in common, "ten little finger and ten little toes." The pictures are done with water color and use soft colors to depict realistic looking babies smiling, giggling, hugging, and even sucking on their fingers. With babies of both genders and many cultures represented, your baby can find a picture that looks like them. The pictures also build on themselves, as each baby remains on the next page after being introduced, until they are all together just before the final baby - the narrator's baby - is introduced. The story uses repetition and one sentence per page, so it remains focused on the sole purpose of showing your baby that all babies have fingers and toes.

While reading this to your little one, you can place their hands or feet on the pages with actual-sized pictures, to show them what is being taught. You can touch or squeeze your little one's fingers and toes when you read the repeating line "and both of these babies, as everyone knows, had ten little fingers, and ten little toes." They may giggle when you tickle their toes, or when you give them three little kisses at the end, just like the narrator does with her baby.

My husband, Nate, read this book to our friend Mosley when he was just a few months old. Mosley would watch wide-eyed as Nate would wiggle his fingers and toes for him, repeating the words to start the learning process.

I love the sweet pictures and message behind the story. But what I really love is that Little One Books gives suggestions on how to get the most out of each read. For example, with our book, they suggest placing your baby's hands and feet up to the actual sized pictures or squeezing fingers and toes while reading. I started doing these little 'lessons' with Sully, and he cracks up every time!

But so many times I've wandered around a book store for hours trying to find something appropriate for Sully's age. Too often, books marketed for his age were too long or too involved for him to enjoy. He would grow restless and become frustrated while I would read to him. This is where Little One Books comes into play! I love that the products can 'grow' with your child. This site makes it easy to make informed choices about the materials you purchase for your little one.

I would absolutely suggest this website to anyone looking for age appropriate reading, listening, and watching materials. I also suggest it to anyone who is feeling overwhelmed by the huge amount of products that are available. I think Little One Books helps to clear your mind and provide some amazing guidance in your purchases."

This book is just wonderful - the illustrations are beautiful and the water color pictures are calming & realistic! I love how the book depicts children of all races from all over the world! The words are so rhythmic and smooth that you will find yourself wanting to read it again and again!

Monkey (my son) especially loved it when I tickled his toes while reading - "and both of these babies, as everyone knows, had ten little fingers, and ten little toes." But what I love the most about this book is the overall message the book sends - that despite our many differences, we are also all the same -- with Ten Fingers & Ten Toes! :) This book is a must have!!
