This wordless story takes young readers on a journey from a snowy city to a tropical island through a series of carefully-detailed illustrations. In an example of how easy it is to escape to a different world simply by reading a story, a young girl finds a book buried in the snow while a young boy finds the same book buried in the sand. The book provides a magical and fantastical element to the story by allowing each child to see into the other's world. Preschoolers will enjoy the mystery of the story as they try to wrap their minds around what they are seeing.
Adding intrigue to the scenario, the actual book looks awfully similar to the book in the story. This is a great story for a creative child who likes to tell stories. As there are no words, children can make up their own story based on the illustrations and use their imaginations to explain what is happening through their eyes. Perhaps your child's interpretation of the story will be something that you never would have thought.
Friendship was the main attraction for Emily, the little girl I babysit. She was delighted to see the two children meet and become friends. We spent a good deal of time talking about the story and what was happening, both of us sharing our own stories. This is a great book to encourage creativity and allow your child to express his or her thoughts.
