This heart-wrenching story of adventure and friendship is written
by an actual wild animal trainer and illustrated by a Caldecott Honor winner. The combination of such talent and knowledge creates a children’s book
guaranteed to far surpass most readers' expectations. Get ready to fall in love
with Bram and his elephant, Modoc. The painted illustrations provide incredible
detail and depth, portraying realistic pictures that will evoke emotion in
readers. One picture that truly stands out is an extreme close up of Modoc’s
eye, surrounded by grey wrinkly skin, and the reflection of Bram’s face smiling
as he whispers his promise to his elephant friend to always stay together. Watching
Bram and Modoc grow up together, from sharing a bottle to hugging joyfully as
they are reunited in their old age creates a bond with these characters not
often experienced in a children’s book.
The story takes place all over the world - Germany, the
ocean, India, and the United States – and provides an opportunity to teach your
child some geography and perhaps discuss some of the cultural differences
visible in the illustrations. There are also many issues addressed in the
story that may inspire questions and discussion with your child. Bram
deals death, disappointment, lies, responsibility, loyalty, determination, and
of course – friendship! On a lighter note, readers will also learn a great deal
about elephants. Your child may be surprised to hear that Modoc already
weighted four thousand pounds when
she was only10-years-old, or that elephants are actually quite good at swimming –
as long as their trunks stay above the water.
This story
actually moved me to tears while reading it to my five year-old niece. Between the
beautiful writing, impressive pictures, and the depth of a true
friendship, I didn’t stand a chance. I had tears rolling down my cheeks while
trying to finish the book. My niece made me smile, however,
when she hugged me and said she would love an elephant as much as Bram loved Modoc
if I got her one for Christmas.
