World Playground introduces your little one to the sounds of other cultures, including language, instruments, tempos and beats. Even the youngest children can appreciate and enjoy the sometimes-subtle rhythm differences of the French, English, Spanish, Mandingo (Sengal), Pitjantijatjara (Australia), Greek, Portuguese,  Patua (Brazil), and Hebrew languages presented on this album. Three Little Birds, sung in English, may stand out to the parents as a Bob Marley cover; the saxophone and percussion create strong Reggae beats that are sure to get parents and their little ones grinning and grooving. There is also Mardi Gras MamboTik Tik Tak (a Greek tango) and Bongo Bong (French rap) full of contrasting half note and staccato notes.  Many of the titles are repeated throughout the song allowing English listeners to easily sing along.

The songs cater to movement, offering inspiring beats that will have listeners bopping and boogying. The Australian song Nyanpi Matilda features a metronome-steady beat that children can  match with movement.   La Mariposa features a chorus of hand claps that are fun to join in with. It is also worth noting that the cover booklet is a wealth of knowledge for adults seeking more information about each song. The booklet explains where the song originated, specifies which language it is sung in, includes a translation of the lyrics in English, and even defines some of the culture-specific words readers may not be familiar with. Sure to provide you with the answers to all your little one's questions!

My three-year-old friend Sam was smiling and moving his arms to the upbeat songs during most of the album. But when  Zichronot M'Africa came on, the minimalistic beat and soft shakers inspired something new: He became very focused. With his head lowered he began jogging in place, moving his arms back and forth and his legs up and down as fast and hard as he could without falling over. I turned the music down to ask what he was doing, but he looked up immediately and yelled, "Hey! I like that!" Not knowing how else to react to his new moves I just laughed and turned it back up. It was very neat to see Sam responding so directly to the music.
