Mr. Rally and his faithful dog, Lightning, have a busy day ahead of them, using a big yellow backhoe to build a pool at the school and a drain for the rain. Follow Mr. Rally through his day as he travels around town, counting from one to five in an irresistible refrain.

Mr. Rally and his faithful dog, Lightning, have a busy day ahead of them, using a big yellow backhoe to build a pool at the school and a drain for the rain. Follow Mr. Rally through his day as he travels around town, counting from one to five in an irresistible refrain.

Mr. Rally loves to dig with his big yellow backhoe, accompanied by his trusty digging dog, Lightning. This adorable story follows Mr. Rally around on his five digging jobs for the day, repeating the numbers and jobs to help readers learn their numbers one through five. The silly cartoon pictures are reminiscent of Wallace and Grommit (if they were cartoons instead of clay animation). This is an excellent story for any child who loves trucks and dirt!

After each digging job, there is a repeating phrase by Mr. Rally, which your little one will quickly learn and join in with; "Dig up rock and dig up clay! Dig up dirt and dig all day!" and "Is all the digging done? No!" In each of Mr. Rally's five digging jobs, his dog Lightning can also be found digging up a bone. See if your toddler can find Lightning! Mr. Rally's final digging job is to flatten the ground for a new zoo. Can your little child find all the zoo animals watching Mr. Rally work?

My two year-old friend Dano loved the line at the end of the book, "Whew! What a day!" He repeated it after me and I started laughing because it was so unexpected and adorable.
