“He wears a coat of thorny quills. To hug this one will take some skills!” Hugging is a favorite activity for many children, and everyone deserves a hug; but how on earth is one supposed to hug a porcupine without getting hurt? The rhyming story is accompanied by watercolor pictures depicting children on each page hugging different animals. This exposes young readers to children of all sizes, shapes, and colors, as well as to many different types of animals.

The nature of the book encourages interaction and creativity from young readers. Which animals can they think of to hug, and how would they go about it? One boy in the book decides to put marshmallows on the ends of each porcupine quill. Does your little one have any clever solutions for how to hug a porcupine before they get to the end of the book? You can also interact by talking about hugs and how they make people feel. And when is a good time to offer a hug.

My friend Dano enjoyed this book immensely when he was two years-old because his parents would add lines about ‘How to hug a Dano’ and then come up with silly ways to hug him. It always resulted in giggles. Now that he’s three, Dano will sometimes develop his own silly ways to hug his mommy and daddy.
