Wild about Books
Wild about Books
Wild about Books
by Judy Sierra

It started when librarian, Molly McGrew, by mistake drove her bookmobile into the zoo.
In this rollicking rhymed story, Molly introduces birds and beasts to this new something called reading. She finds the perfect book for every animal - tall books for giraffes, tiny ones for crickets. In no time at all, Molly has them "forsaking their niches, their nests, and their nooks," going "wild, simply wild, about wonderful books." Judy Sierra's funny animal tale coupled with Marc Brown's lush, fanciful paintings will have the same effect on young Homo sapiens. Altogether, it's more fun than a barrel of monkeys

Comical images of favorite zoo animals discovering the joy of books combines with entertaining rhymes to create a delightful, multi-award-winning picture book to add to a child's library.  Kids will giggle over the clever illustrations depicting animals reading species-appropriate stories, such as a pair of crocodiles reading about Captain Hook's reptile nemesis or an elephant reading Dumbo.  The text is catchy and varies between educational - learning that the panda bears would prefer books in Chinese - to just plain silly - seeing the bears lick the pictures off the page.  The bright, detailed illustrations will keep preschool kids scouring the pages for hidden details for a while.

Thanks to a library theme, this is a great story to use as an introduction to a the rules of the library, like returning the books on time to avoid fines , such as the bandicoot, or making sure that your hands are clean before handling a book, unlike the muddy rabbits.  While there are plenty of easily recognizable animals, there are also lesser known ones, including wombats, skunks and Tasmanian devils.

This story elicited numerous giggles by Emily, the three-year-old I babysit.  The thought of animals flocking to the library and picking out books to read was a source of great amusement as were the images of hyenas sharing jokes with snakes and llamas reading books while eating lunch.  There's plenty of humor for adults to appreciate as well, even if it goes over the little ones' head.  One section is devoted to bugs writing haiku and a scorpion giving each a "stinging review" and calling the pieces "pretentious" or "redundant."

Judy Sierra is the author of many award-winning books for children. She holds a PhD in folklore and mythology from the University of California, Los Angeles, and is renowned for her retellings of traditional tales. She lives with her husband, Bob Kaminski, in northern California.

Marc Brown is known best for his Arthur series. He grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania where as a child he was influenced by family and friends that would be eventually become the many stories of an aardvark.Trained at the Cleveland Art Institute, Marc went on to create more than 100 picture books for children. Before his current success, however, Marc had many jobs, including stints as a truck driver, soda jerk, actor, chicken farmer, television art director, short order cook, and college professor! He now lives in Hingham, Massachusetts and Martha's Vineyard, with his wife, illustrator and author Laurie Krasny Brown, and their daughter Eliza.

When we got the book I first noticed that the images are by Marc Brown. I'm young and I grew up on Arthur. I remember that he created the show Arthur! I loved that show. So I really enjoyed this book as much as Avery did. It's tailored to 3 yr olds, but not many 3 yr olds can read so I think it would be great for the beginning reader of about 5-6 as well. It's a very cute book and I think any child can enjoy it. It's big too, much bigger than the average book. So happy with it. Avery loves it!
