When Adri sets out to explore the ocean, he has no idea how colorful the world is. He quickly discovers that there are all kinds of fish in the deep blue sea big and tiny, smooth and spiny, colorful and plain, different and the same. Join Adri as he travels the ever changing currents of the ocean and see if you can find your favorite rockfish among the waves!

You Be You is the companion book for Kranz’s best-selling book Only One You. The same young rockfish, Adri, is out exploring the ocean one day and can’t help notice how different all the fish are. Some swim up, other swim down; some are colorful, while others are not; some are loud, and others are quiet. Every fish is unique in their own way. Adri learns that “We all have something special that only we can share.” Adri’s Papa adds, “That’s what makes the world so colorful and beautiful!” Vibrantly colored round ‘rockfish’ are overlaid on a real photographs of the sea. The rockfish are actual rocks that have been painted on in great detail. The font changes size and color frequently, keeping the reading eye-catching.

This book can be a transition into talking with your little one about everyone being different and how that can be embraced, rather than feared or rejected.  Finding some examples from people in their own life will help drive this point home for your child. The wonderful pictures will also inspire an art project of painting rocks. You don’t have to be as fancy or detailed as the gorgeous rockfish in Only One You; simply find some fun shaped rocks, wash and dry them, and decorate them with some old nail polish!

I read this book to my friend Dano and he was mesmerized by the colorful rockfish. After reading the story, he wanted to flip through the book on his own several times throughout the rest of the day. He kept coming back to it! We worked on identifying shapes and colors in the pictures after he had had time to look through the book on his own.
